Dog coat matting happens when a dog’s fur becomes tangled and forms dense, tight clumps, called mats. These mats aren’t just messy—they can pull on the skin, trap dirt and moisture, and even lead to discomfort or infection if left untreated.
For severe matting, professional groomers may need to carefully remove or shave mats to protect your dog’s skin.
Doggie Detailing practices humanity over vanity!
Your dog’s comfort and well-being always comes first. Regular grooming and brushing at home are the best ways to keep your dog comfortable, healthy, and looking great.
If your pet arrives matted, they will need to be shaved using a very short blade. To remove matting safely, the blade must go underneath the mats and very close to the skin. This follows our "Humanity Before Vanity" policy to prioritize your pets comfort and well-being.
We perform a comb test during check-in. If a metal comb cannot pass all the way through the coat to the skin, the coat is considered matted and cannot be brushed out humanely.
Severely matted dogs will incur additional grooming fees.
If the coat is pelted, a Pelt Removal Fee starting at $50.00 will be applied.
Your dog may feel more sensitive to touch, especially in area's were mats were tight against the skin. You may also notice redness or irritation. This is normal and should improve in a few days.
Hidden under mats, there may be rashes, hotspots, or bruises. These will now have chance to heal with exposure to air.
Your pet may feel a little insecure or chilly, and some may act differently (e.g., more reserved or overly energetic.)
Keep your dog warm - Their coat no longer provides insulation. Offer cozy blankets, sweaters (if tolerated), and limit exposure to sun or cold.
Watch for Skin Reactions - Check for any redness, bumps, or oozing sores. If anything looks concerning or worsens, consult your vet. Avoid excessive touching or petting if your pet seems uncomfortable.
No Immediate Bathing - Please avoid bathing your dog for at least 5-7 days, unless advised by your groomer or vet.
Use Gentle Pet Products (If Needed) - If you need to clean a spot, use a hypoallergenic fragrance-free pet wipe or soothing skin spray. Never use human or baby shampoo or wipes.
Protect Against Sunburn - A freshly shaved dog can burn quickly! Limit outdoor sun exposure during peak UV hours or use pet-safe sunscreen on exposed areas if outdoors.

When hair becomes tightly matted around a dog’s ears, it pulls on the delicate skin of the ear flap and traps moisture, debris, and bacteria underneath. This creates irritation and infection over time. The constant tension and inflammation can weaken the tiny blood vessels inside the ear.
After mats are safely removed, it’s common for dogs to shake their heads due to sensitivity or relief. If those blood vessels have already been compromised, they may rupture, leading to a hematoma or even a tear at the edge of the ear.
Shaving the mats doesn’t cause the problem — prolonged matting and untreated inflammation do.
They can result in significant discomfort, trauma, and sometimes even surgery.
Routine grooming is about more than keeping your dog looking beautiful — it’s about protecting their comfort, health, and overall well-being.
